Bygones- Seeing Double

New York based band Seeing Double released their fourth single “Bygones” this week. They had massive success with their debut single "Leah" that currently has over 3 million streams on spotify. They originally gained popularity on Tik Tok platform with their series “brushing our teeth to our song Leah until it blows up.” The factor that led to their massive burst of popularity is their retro and psychedelic rock style, strong vocal performance and groovy guitar solos. The band has shared how heavily inspired they are by artists like Fleetwood Mac, The Strokes and Paul McCartney and these inspirations are completely evident in their soulful vocals, gritty guitar pieces and use of three part harmonies. “Bygones” tells the story of a painful heartbreak that is accompanied by a thrashing guitar, belting vocals, and prominent tambourine piece. The song feels like a very natural progression for the band’s discography as it still has the retro elements that everyone loved in “Leah” but explores a new aspect of it with a more hard rock angle to the song. It’s dynamic, energetic and an all around great rock song.

Wishy Washy- Alaina Rays

Boston based artist Alaina Ray released her debut single ‘Wishy Washy’ last week. After teasing her songs via social media over the past few months she released the first of many singles leading up to the release of her debut EP. The track features a vampy 2000’s guitar, Ray’s breathy but strong vocals and a catchy chorus that will be stuck in your head hours after listening. The song tells the story of someone constantly giving mixed signals, Ray takes this heart ache and turns it into a fun bop to dance around your room too. If you like artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Gracie Abrams you’ll love Ray’s bedroom pop.

Halloween- HUNNY

Four person garage rock band HUNNY put out their song "Halloween" as the final track on their 2019 debut album "Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes." Unlike many other Halloween titled songs, like "This is Halloween'' or "Halloween" by Phoebe Bridgers, this track does not attempt to match the energy of the spooky season. Rather in HUNNY fashion "Halloween" begins with a groovy guitar solo accompanied by synths and lead singer Jason Yager using his whiny vocals to announce "I currently am without you." The song takes a fun play on the holiday and is an anthem for all the last minute party go-ers and non costume planners featuring the lyrics "I just remembered it was Halloween// So I guess I'm going as a guy who's paying parking tickets// On his laptop on the living room floor// In the same clothes I wore yesterday// I don't think that I'm gonna change." While the song isn't classically spooky song the track is still a fun play on the holiday and can be put on a Halloween playlist.

A Certain Romance- Arctic Monkeys

In honor of everyone’s favorite 2014 Tumblr band announcing their first tour in over four years I had to add an Arctic Monkeys song. While technically only one of the members is a dad they are considered DILFs in my mind. “A Certain Romance” is the closing track of Arctic Monkeys debut album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.” The song features some of my favorite guitar solos of the band’s entire discography. The song opens with this high energy, gritty guitar solo before dropping off to become a groovy guitar rock jam. I think it perfectly encapsulates the band finding their footing and discovering their sound. Additionally, "A Certain Romance" is possibly the most British Arctic Monkeys ever has been, featuring the heavy Yorkshire accent and iconic lyrics like “They might wear classic Reeboks// Or knackered Converse// Or tracky bottoms tucked in socks''-- aka possibly the most British lyrics anyone could find. “A Certain Romance” perfectly walks the line of hard rock and calm and groovy garage rock that completely reflects the start of Arctic Monkeys and the band finding their sound.
